Tunde Folawiyo | Yao Ming Partners with African Wildlife Foundation to Ban Ivory Trade
In early March, former NBA star Yao Ming stood before Chinese government with a petition requesting a ban on the domestic ivory trade. Delivered in Beijing during the opening session of China’s annual National People’s Congress, the petition was signed by a number of leading business figures throughout China who support the conservation of Africa’s wildlife. Through the valued advocacy of citizens from all over the world, including Tunde Folawiyo, the African Wildlife Foundation continues its mission of preserving the land of Africa to ensure the safety of these endangered species.
Founded in 1961, the African Wildlife Foundation – formerly known as the African Wildlife Leadership Foundation – has continually advocated for the preservation of the continent’s wildlife, striving to bring awareness to the endangerment of some of Africa’s animals. Dr. Patrick Bergin, CEO of African Wildlife Foundation, praised Yao for the initiative.
“This is a rare opportunity to raise the issue of ivory trade and elephant poaching before 3,000 delegates from across China, and the African Wildlife Foundation commends Yao Ming for seizing the opportunity” he said. “Many delegates might not be aware of the elephant poaching crisis in Africa as a result of demand for ivory products in China, so this petition, delivered at such an opportune time, helps put it on their radar.”
Partnering with Yao Ming, WildAid and Save the Elephants, the African Wildlife Foundation has initiated a campaign hoping to reduce the rising demand for ivory and rhino horn throughout Asia and beyond. With this, the AWF is urging all governments with ivory stockpiles to destroy them, as well as ban legal, domestic trades of ivory.
As an organisation, the African Wildlife Foundation focuses on identifying large, ecologically important areas that house a variety of endangered species. These areas are home to a host of species that include Western African giraffes, mountain gorillas, white rhinos and elephants among many others in need of help. In addition to their mission of promoting the preservation of the continent’s endangered species, the African Wildlife Foundation strives to raise awareness about the negative impact of climate change as well as a host of other issues impacting Africa and the world as a whole. With the continued support of millions of African citizens such as Tunde Folawiyo and others throughout the world, the African Wildlife Foundation will continue its mission of banning the ivory trade and further protecting the endangered species of the continent.
