Since its establishment in 1961, the Africa Wildlife Foundation has conducted extensive research in order to battle the injustices brought upon the continent’s vibrant wildlife populations. From poaching to habitat destruction, there are a variety of devastating factors impacting countless species throughout Africa.

In combatting the hardships that plague the continent’s communities of wildlife, the AWF continues to partner with various organisations. Through the continued support of advocates of wildlife conservation, such as Tunde Folawiyo and millions of others all over the continent and beyond, the AWF may continue its mission to bring much-needed assistance to the struggling wildlife populations of Africa.

In its efforts to forge an impact on conservation efforts throughout Africa, the AWF employs a variety of programmes paramount to its goals. These include the construction of conservation lodges that both house tourists and maintain environmentally friendly standards.

Tunde FolawiyoThe area surrounding Kenya’s Amboseli National Park is home to a variety of wildlife including elephants, cheetahs, giraffe and lions. The Amboseli-Chyulu Wildlife Corridor serves as a main route for the park’s wildlife and is vital to its survival. Today, it is under threat by habitat loss. Ranch lands within the park have undergone sub-divisions to individual owners who have in turn sold their lots for development. To combat these changes, AWF has facilitated lease agreements with local owners in order to secure this land for wildlife, while providing vital income for the community.

Opened for operation in 2010, Tawi Lodge is located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, at the centre of Kilitome Conservancy, an initiative created by AWF and 100 Masai landowners. This partnership between landowners and AWF will result in enhanced protection for wildlife, along with additional job opportunities for local people. As part of the initiative, a portion of Tawi lodging fees supports the conservancy. While the Lodge was once responsible for paying the salaries of conservancy scouts, the AWF has taken over, demonstrating its unwavering willingness to aid in these conservation efforts.

These partnerships demonstrate the vast potential for change when private companies join forces with the AWF and its goals of a brighter future for the continent’s wildlife. Citizens worldwide can contribute by choosing to stay at one of the AWF’s various sponsored conservancy tourism lodges when visiting the magnificent landscapes of Africa. Through the continued support of Tunde Folawiyo and millions of other wildlife advocates, the organisation may further inspire positive change throughout the region.
